Jul. 27th, 2008 08:20 pmJust got home from a big family dinner with my parents, Alison, Crystal, Alex, and my grandparents.
Went over a bit early so I could fill back in the hole my mom and I worked on digging a few weeks ago. They can't use the bush after all, so back in the dirt went.
My grandparents cooked (why? More on that later), and outdid themselves. They brought down a massive amount of green beans, stuffed peppers, fresh garden tomatoes, sweet corn on the cob, and a rhubarb cobbler. We cooked the corn, reheated the peppers and beans, and away we went. They also brought all disposable plates, forks, and tablecloth so no dishes were required. Just food and a lot of family talk. An indoor picnic.
There were pictures of Uncle Oren's 80th birthday, we shared some of the pictures I took down in Florida awhile back, and I lent my mom my copy of Peace, Love, and BBQ...with the way it was getting picked up and read frequently, I may want to just buy a 2nd copy...
The reason they did everything was that my mom had been having a lot of pain in her neck and arms recently, and finally went to the Doctor on Thursday. She has ruptured discs in her neck, and is going to see the neurosurgeon Monday, and they expect to be operating very quickly afterwards, so we did this as a way for her to have a family gathering without putting any strain on her.
With luck, everything will be fine, but just in case...well, we took care of things.
My grandparents also brought down three large boxes of sassafras splits (with a little bit of hickory in there, I think), so I now have plenty of wood to experiment with. Soon, we will begin to see the fruits of my....ok, my and
flaggerx's labors.
