Serious question: Can cats experience amnesia?

Mystery Cat has been spending time with me around the house all day, and I'm starting to wonder if my paranoia was unfounded and this -is- Onyx, he just had some kind of bump on the head or something.

He's acting -almost exactly- like Onyx except for his different meow. Climbs on my leg to try and get food the same way, bumping my leg for pets the same way, hell, even bothering me in the bathroom for attention the same way!

I'm seriously wondering....maybe I'm just a little lonely, but he looks almost exactly like Onyx, he's acting like Onyx, and he certainly doesn't seem to have any problems with being inside the house or finding the litterboxes....even if a few things aren't quite lining up right, it sure seems like he could be Onyx.

The thingy you put on your face every night has shifted you into a slightly different dimension where your cat isn't quite right.
Of note, how old is your kitty? Mine's behavior has shifted as she's aged from wee little wet freshborn cat to what she is now.

Heh.

He's about 2 years old.

wait a minute. You've had your cat for two years, and all it takes is for him to be in a different setting (outside) for you to think he might be an entirely different cat?

this is cracking me up.

I freely admit it's odd. :) He was (is) just acting very strangely for a bit. And c'mon, I'm not good with people's faces! Cats are even harder!

did onyx have a chip?

one way to check is to take the cat in and see if she has a chip to identify her.

also, compare pictures.

No, sadly, no chip.

What pictures I've been able to take look similar enough to me, and when sent to Alex, he couldn't tell.

How long had (has?) Onyx been missing?

My Mom has an 18 year old cat named Frank who has honest to goodness Kitty Amnesia (as diagnosed by his Vet). He routinely forget where he is, and acts as if he's seeing people for the first time every time he sees them. There have been some amusing "I forgot I raised my leg to scratch and then I saw my leg and it scared the crap outta me" moments, but mostly he's just very....confused.
