Trying to figure out an odd Office '07 problem, I found some threads that almost, but not quite, worked over at AskMeFi, so I signed up for an AskMF account, then realized after I paid my $5 that I couldn't post a question for a week.

However, in the midst of grumbling, I tripped over the solution I needed, so that's done with and now I'm futzing about on AskMeFi.

While I was thinking about that, I remembered that I wanted to see if I could find a cast recording of Doctor Atomic after reading about the debut performance at the Met, and after looking around, it looks like it's only available as a DVD. :(

It's been one of those kind of mornings where I'm figuring out things I need, but I'm probably only getting about half of what I want.

...huh, and apparently there's also a hailstorm outside. Fun!

Though it's easy enough to rip the audio from a DVD.

That's true, but it's still not quite the same as getting a CD and having the libretto and liner notes. Plus, it looks like the DVD was filmed with a different opera company, so I'm not sure if the production would be the same. :(

They do mention that the Met is supposed to make a recording available...I guess I'll just have to wait.

I too am disappointed that Dr. Atomic's only available on DVD because while I was disappointed when I saw it on the live-in-HD version at the movie theater, some of the choral stuff was absolutely beautiful (and the "Batter, my heart, three person'd God" aria might be the most beautiful piece Adams, with an assist from John Donne, has ever written) and I think maybe living with it just as music for a while might turn me around.

I haven't even seen the production - I'd really like to. Is the blu-ray DVD the same production sets used for the Met HD broadcast?

I don't *think* so, but I think the DVD is the original Peter Sellars-directed production so it might be even more interesting visually.

Hmm.

Maybe the Met recordings will come out soonish...I'd be interested in seeing contrasts. Dammit, I really want to hear this now.
