Aug. 6th, 2003 01:05 amRosa Parks.
Sorry, I'm being a history major here for a sec.
I just saw a thing about how Rosa Parks was so dynamic for her 1 night of refusing to move. But the thing is, she wasn't 'just a seamstress', as some like to portray her.
This is a woman who was a major member of the local NAACP and worked with the SCLC. She was a strong believer in social justice, and she'd made similar attempts at desegregating other areas. This just happened to be the one that caught major attention. She was paitent, and she stuck to her beliefs even as the worst happened to her and those around her.
So why do we minimalize this woman's life and her beliefs by calling her 'just a poor, tired seamstress' in so many recordings of what happened one evening in Birmingham Alabama?
Nobody should have to be 'just' anything. But this seems particularly annoying to me. Even if at the most uncharitable you called her an agent provocateur for her people, that's still recognizing that she's more than 'just' something. That she worked dillegently to achieve what she wanted.
Ah, well.

Aug. 6th, 2003 06:31 pmHome again!
skarlette's gonna be getting a win2k CD from a friend, soon, and that will hopefully end the PC drama. :D If not, I dunno. I'll figure out /something./
Work went well, though quite busily today, and I was surprised to get called into my Boss's office.
"I need to discuss hours with you."
Me: with light fear "Oh? What's up?"
"Oh, nothing bad. Just that Mike B.'s girlfriend got hired by the Public Info office, and she'll be working 8-5, and he wants to know if he can switch from 9-6 to an 8-5 schedule. Would you mind trading with him?"
Me: "Oh! Well, cool. I think I can deal with taking an extra hour of sleep."

Aug. 6th, 2003 07:00 pmWell. That's odd.
A bunch of LJ-originated text messages just landed in my phone. Most from Lisa (from back in MAY!), but one from someone asking me to call them at home, with a # I don't recognize, and a 440 area code that rang to a house's answering machine that didn't seem farmiliar.
If you did this, leave me a line here with a good time to call?

Aug. 6th, 2003 07:54 pmSo. Remember back last Sunday when I mentioned the cable was out, and that Andy informed me it was out the Sunday before, too?
Andy talked to the guy who handles the cable for the college today. He said it was probably related to some stuff they're doing on the tennis courts (construction and whatnot), and that yes, it'd probably keep repeating every weekend.
That definently annoys me. They didn't even bother to tell us that it's going to happen, and the best the dude can offer is 'sorry, it'll keep happening.'

Aug. 6th, 2003 11:16 pmHey, all.
skarlette's OS upgrade to win2000 looks likely, but unfortunately it looks like part of the problem is that her old modem (A $30 OfficeMax special internal 56k), has cooked itself.
Out of curiousity, does anyone have a spare internal or external one that's win98 and win2k compatible?
