Anyone who wouldn't mind helping out my project, could you give me like a paragraph on why you like to MUSH or otherwise roleplay online, and possibly talk about the MUSH as a community?
I roleplay because it's a creative challenge, a writing challenge, and just plain fun to be a part of a story that's non-predictable. Mushes provide a framework within which to do so, like haiku and sonnets have a pattern to them. It may restrict, but it also keeps coherency. :)
As a community . . there is a pretty strong tendency to form your own little club within the greater whole, like attracting like and whatnot. But there's also the chance of meeting and interacting with really new and different people, other cultures, other religions . . and it doesn't matter what you are in real life. Who you are is defined by the text on the screen, and that can be incredibly freeing.
MUSHing is a selective environment, one that is much more controlled than a chat room. For M3, people have to actually go through an application process, where they put thought into what they want to do with their character, and have to put thought into designing a workable concept. This pretty much weeds out the people who are cruising the net for cybersex, spamming, etc. Everyone has put at least a minimum amount of work into their character, and wants to preserve their privilege to play that character, so the end result is a group that has a basic, similar interest as you, and a group of people who are willing to conduct themselves by the rules (most of the time!) in order to acheive an enjoyable RP environment.
A MUSH is a community like many others, made up of many minds with both their hopes as well as their fears. Bonds are formed and broken, friendships and rivalries are created, it all revolves aroun the reason why they are all there. The desire to create a world. The desire to bring an idea to life, a tiny shard of persona given voice and form. To immerse themselves into this fantastic place and let their imaginations run free. Everyone in the community manifests this desire for this creation to flourish in different ways... Hopefully in ways that help to bring fufillment to other people's desires as well. This comes full circle back to the community of the MUSH, which when it is healthy tries to reinforce positive behavior and reduce behavior that causes problems.
