Had a thought while walking around today:

America lost some of its' magic when we started using chain-link fences.

You see, back when we used board fences, there was a lot more mystery in daily life. You see artifacts of this in paintings, movies, and cartoons. At construction sites, people gathered to wonder just what was being built, with kids (and sometimes adults) crowding occcasional knotholes for a quick peek.

Circuses would arrive, hidden by the mystique of boards, and nobody knew what surprises were in store, but all anticipated them. People'd speculate, and the average joe was encouraged to use his imagination daily, even if just when he went out to get some lunch, as he said, "I wonder what they're building there...", and he'd think about it.

Today, we have chain-link.

Chain-link is stronger. Safer. More durable.

See-through.

No more imagination. No more tantalizing glimpses through an illicit portal.

No more wondering. Just stark, metal corseted truth.

Seems like this is one of those things that happens, and you just have to occasionally yearn for the earlier times.

On the way home I pass by this old graveyard. Today, I happened to note, the curlicued black iron supports, for what would have supported a beautiful, black lacy, wrought iron fence to surround the graveyard, behind the soul-less chain link fence there now and felt some sort of loss. I know how you feel.

Well, take heart, for there is a way to recreate that magic.

With people's houses.

On a similar note...

Remember when Chex Mix and Rice Krispies Treats were special because you had to make them yourself from the recipe on the back, preferably alongside your family, and the recipes yielded enough so you needed the whole family to eat it all before it went stale? Now they're packaged and sold in stores in single-serving sizes like so much else... and the difference in flavor and texture between homemade and store-bought isn't as much as, say, the difference between homemade and store-bought cookies.

Anyone else have "remember whens" to toss in? -- Pteryx
