Good:

Doing your federal taxes and finding out you're getting a $500 return.

Bad:
Doing your state return and finding out that Ohio passed a law called the 'Ohio Use Tax'. What it involves is charging you Ohio sales tax on anything you purchased over the internet that did not charge you sales tax. (Like, example, a lot of smaller web stores. Though fortunately Amazon and other major retailers do charge sales tax.)

So, from those smaller stores, I bought about $1100 worth of stuff, mostly the computer parts I used to build [livejournal.com profile] litagemini's computer and repair my own.

Result: I owe almost $30 in Ohio taxes this year, instead of the $65 refund I was expecting.

Bitches. Bitches bitches bitches bitches bitches.

Bitches!

The burden of proof is on those assholes to prove that I bought anything on the Internet while in Ohio.

They can drag their five bucks out of me after I've gotten my money's worth wasting their time.

The major downfall for me is in my incessant keeping of receipts and using UPS or FedEx shipping, who also keep records. Especially on the big tickets.

Though, I admit you're going to have more fun.

They probably wouldn't waste their money going after five dollars... but they have been going after people.

I've had the pleasure of dealing with them in this regard.

That should go in one of those books of 'really lame laws'.

To be completely fair, all citizens are supposed to deduct sales tax from all transactions across state borders and claim it in their state income tax forms. This use law is just reinforcing an existing law. Anything short is tax fraud, and while the chance of an audit on a few transactions is minimal, and the burden of proof with the state, it's still their day in the end.

Admittedly true. But annoying. Especially since most electronics stores try to leave off out of state sales taxes to try and give the consumer a better deal. But, oh, well.
