Ngghg. We had 4 servers and a release station die just as I was about to leave work. I've been helping fix them. Yay for being salaried.

Also got him with a pet peeve while I was documenting what happened: Got contacted by the new Blues@M3 to help him with questions and such.

Seems nice enough, but there was one thing that raised my hackles a bit: His IM (and apparently his email) already refer to him as Protoman@m3.

You got the character yesterday, you arrogant fuck.

You have not proven you can fill the shoes. You have been given the chance. You do not own him. You have no right to claim that you do. You are standing on the shoulders of a lot of people, particularly Spork and Terry, and in no way shape or form are you justified in claiming that. I played Blues for more than a year, almost 2 years, and I never felt I was solely responsible for the character or should be that closely identified with him.

The only two people at M3 who could really legitmately make the claim that it's all them, and nobody else, are Cookie and Snake, because No-one else in the history of M3 has ever played either character except them.

There is no shame in following a line of predecessors, so long as you act at the same or greater level of excellence. But don't try to diminish all the hard work they did.

That, and/ or he's coming at it from a practical, rather than sentimental, viewpoint. New MUSH, new email account and new AIM handle so he can remember which one is which.

It's probably not malice.

Yeah, I know, but it just seems kinda arrogant to me. As I mentioned, if he was really that worried about keeping things straight, what the hell is wrong with a flat text file containing characters, award dates, and login details? And he has been at the MUSH for awhile, but as far as I know he didn't do this with his other characters. (If he did and I'm wrong, my bad, but, far as I know this is a new behavior for the guy, from what I can remember of him.)

I can't honestly blame you. Sentimentality to a character happens. Kinda why I went and bruised my knuckles when I didn't get Blues the time I went for him. So I totally feel you.

But if he wants to act in that fashion, his attitude will be his own undoing, if it's -not- whom I'd hoped would've gotten the character. And if my hopes for the char didn't make it, that's a darn shame.

Still, be the better individual, and just shrug it off. Eventually, you'll feel the better for it. Though admittedly, it's good to vent. Release isn't a bad thing, just whether it's controlled or not.

I'm doing my best, and trying to keep an open mind now that I've gotten the steam out.

Of course, the fact that I got 5 IMs from him last night asking if I agreed or disagreed with his RP choices was a bit worrying.

I was as polite as I could be and filled him in as much as I could. I just...I dunno. I know it's probably just being a noob, but it tiched me a bit.

I am Frost Man and Frost Man is me!

I say this cause I took Frost without knowing anything about him, what's he's done and who's played him. He's not my character, but if we all got together in 20 years, and listed off who we were, I think that's who I'd be remembered by. 'That Frost Man' or 'Popsicle Man', or whatnot.

All good points. On the other hand, you also took someone who was not a big draw character (No offense. :D), and really made him your own over a good period of time. That's different than stepping into an EFC/SFC and saying that you're /absolutely/ him, on the first day.

Hell, if he'd at least waited until he'd gotten out a bit more, I might have not even said a thing.

None taken. To my knowledge the only other Frost Man was played by Quint. :p

Hoo boy. c_c

I can understand putting it on IM and stuff just so you could update your altchar list and all. ._. Yes, he has big shoes to fill. (I, uhm, I apped Blues, too.)

But dude, he's new. x_x

Woah. You apped Blues and he won? I've RPed with the guy... he's okay, but he's not on par with you.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I wrote out my app on paper in a day and a half. x_x
And that my take on him wasmore... hmm. Well, it was probably a very different interpretation.

But eee, thank you. X)

Indeed - I'd have loved to see you as Blues. ^^

It seems that the M3 interpretation of Blues is... a lot different from how he appears in the games and manga, I think. I dunno - it always strikes me as a little jarring compared to what I'm used to. Its not necessaraly a bad take on him, just... different.

The new guy deserves the benefit of the doubt, and time to settle in - I hope that he gets more comfortable with the character soon.

From: [identity profile] bzarcher.livejournal.com
Really? I thought I did decently close to the games/manga where I could. I just adjusted as appropriate for theme.

I will admit he does deserve that benefit, tho.

You did a great job as Blues - there are always going to be some things that you might disagree on, but everyone sees a character a bit differently. And that's part of the fun of the entire MU* experience - if you want all the characters to do exactly what you want, you write fanfiction. ^^

So we'll see how he does - if he works out, great. If not... Blues isn't the sort of character that I think you can play for a while if he doesn't click very well.

And you apped three times? Well, that makes me feel a bit better about it then. ^_^

3 times for Blues, twice for Zero, wrote an app for Colonel once but never felt up to sending it in.

If it makes you feel better, I apped 3 times before getting him, not to mention for Zero twice. :D

We'll see. :D I'd note that my first while, I sucked pretty hard, too. ;D

I'm not refering to how he's doing as Blues -- just how he is in general. He was Enker before this. Fairly nice guy, but I remember him having some grammar and usage mishaps.

He did seem kinda stilted. We'll see.

Why put it on IM? If you're so worried, do what I used to do and have a text file with the altchars and dates in them? And the email? Sheesh.

Next time, Gadget. Next tiiiiiiiime. :D (Seriously, keep apping if you see someone you like.)

Ziss is true. That's a little odd, but hey. I'm sure it'd be like a dream come true if you grew up playing the games or something. c_c

Heehee! No kiddingabout three times, hmm? :D I definitely will. I'm tempted to toss it your way and get your opinion for next time. X) So I can be ahead of the game.

Sure. Heck, if anyone else wants me to look at apps, I'm pretty much always willing to proofread apps. Even if I'm not really in the game, I'm still sorta okay at writing.

I'd say there are more people who can claim characters as 'theirs'. Not many, I'll grant you, though. Jet and Iris spring to mind. Not 'the one and only', but definetly the people who have truly defined who the characters are.

You have a point there, though I don't think either of them would neccesarily come out about it. :D

I sort of started doing this with Ballade. He's become one of my standard login/password components. But this is well after I had the character for nine months - I certainly didn't do it right at the start, and I no longer really have any claim on the character. He's not 'mine'.

I don't know - I see what some people are saying, but at the same time, it does smack of arrogance to take on the mantle that quickly. But then, perhaps it's a form of psyching himself up. Ultimately, however, his play will oust him. I honestly doubt he will have Blues forever - Blues gets good folks for long runs, but he's just... not a permanent character. I dunno.

However, if someone had done that with Ballade right after the first time I dropped him (unwillingly), I probably would have reacted the same way.

For the record, I know the player mainly as he's a very good friend of a very good friend of mine.

(Note: I am not writing this as a 'omg no u dint' thing)

It's just a thing that he does. He always gets a new AIM and E-Mail for whoever he feels his primary character is. He did it as Forte on MatrixMUSH, Bass.EXE on VL, and now apparently Blues on M3. I'm fairly certain he's not doing it as a 'he is mine now' thing, just as personal tradition.

And I can vouch that he is indeed a good RPer. He's some of the little bit of fun that I had on MatrixMUSH, specifically when he took a swing at Blues (Stu) which resulted in Hyperion (me) shoving him to the ground because HE IS ALL THAT IS MAN. The player may take a little bit to build up a head of steam with someone like Blues, but I'm sure he'll start rocking.

Y'know. Just playing Devil's Advocate.

Oh, and I know where you're coming from with this. When I dropped Elec and the other person took him up, well, I basically took the character back as soon as he opened again. It's unsettling to see someone you played go down the tubes.

Date: 2004-03-05 02:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bzarcher.livejournal.com
Oh, I don't mean he's gonna put it down the tubes. I just felt like he was kinda pushing everyone else out of the book, and that didn't feel right.

Why does he do it, tho? It just seems a bit arrogant.

I hope he enjoys himself, and that he does a good job for people, and that's the important part. It just steamed me a little.

Also on the subject of 'All Mine', let it be known,

I WILL RETURN AS SILENT LOG!

Only, you know, after I finally figure out why I can't connect to rpg-works from here, and I get the free time to actually meet demands.

Thankfully, he's a lot easier to get into than Dr. Light. (Dr. Light was fun, yes, but when he wasn't easy to get into, it was pulling of hair and gnashing of teeth.)

As a side note, I've been unable to view Diesel Sweeties as well.

Note.

Okay.
Guys.
This is the 'new' Blues.
I know this topic is old.
BZA.
I did not mean to offend you.
Tori, yes, I do have occasional grammatical errors, and I do my best to check them. But a lot of the time when I play late into the night and early morning hours, I'm going to have errors.
I can usually type around 115 WPM without any errors whatsoever.

As for my screen name.
Yes, I do this so I am easily contacted.
I am not claiming that Blues is exclusively mine. When I drop him, I'll leave the screen name behind. Why did I change it, though?
My name beforehand was 'Enker M3'.
I cannot be Blues and have the screen name 'Enker M3'.
So I took 'Protoman M3'.

Pat, I appreciate that you defended me.

BZArcher, I inquire as to what you agree or disagree with on occasion because I respected how you roleplayed the character. When I was doing that most commonly, I was just starting with the character, of course.
As you've probably noticed, I eased up on that shortly afterwards
