It makes sense, given the existance of Dark Matter. The relationship between matter and energy would indicate something similar, no?

And yes, I do forsee him making a WMD or some similar horror with it.

IIRC, 'dark energy' is just the term assigned to the 90% of the energy the universe is supposed to contain, but physicists can't account for. Like Einstein's 'universal constant'.

Not to say that it doesn't exist, but right now it's a convenient get-out clause to make equations balance properly. Unless my knowledge of the field is out of date.
