Nothing like leaving work at 9:30pm, coming back at 8:30AM, and finding a ton of work left there in the intervening 12 hours. Wooo.

So very, very bleah right now.

However, the new iPod Photos that are replacing the 40 and 60gb iPods (which makes some sense - better battery life, colour displays, etx, and at nearly the same price points...) have filled me with irrational Apple Lust.

I'm trying very hard to be good. Very, very hard. I know I don't NEED one, and I know for damn sure I shouldn't put it on any form of credit. I should pay off more bills, maybe look at once the Washer/Dryer's paid off, or perhaps after the W/D and one of the credit cards is totally flattened in about 5 more months (I hope).

But...so shiny...so sleek. Even if the fuckers did stop bunding a firewire cable because they want to market to the wider USB 2.0 audience and make Firewire the secondary option...

If you do get a new one...

I'll be more than happy to take the old one off your hands. :)

Mmmmmm, used goods.

Sadly, I actually sold the old one back a few months ago when I was in a money crunch. Otherwise, I'd have been happy to.

Indeed she did.

On the other hand, with this news, I bet you could probably bargain-snipe another older iPod as they come out on eBay.

Well, just how expensive are they?

$350 for the 30GB iPod Photo, plus another $20 or so for the firewire cable, since I trust firewire's speed over USB 2.0.

The iPod shinies will still be there in a few months. They may even be better. Reduce outstanding debt now, buy toys later. :)

Yes. Yes it does.

Especially since I used to own a 2G 10 gb one.

I just orderd the 30GB one. They no longer come with a firewire cable? But my machine has firewire (on the sound card, wth?) ... I forget the speed of it and USB 2.0 - is there a significant difference?

USB 2.0's got the 250mbps max transfer, Firewire's 400 (or 800 if you've got an 800 bus connector, but that's not very common at all.) It's not that bad, and the firewire cable's only $20, but...

Oddly enough, the standard iPod still comes with Firewire first. It's just the Photos and Minis that are switching to USB 2.0 as the pack-in. I suspect this is part of A) going to the PC market, and B) trying to make the photo iPods and the USB to Camera accessory more attractive.

"...it's just the Photos and Minis..." (emphasis mine)

Maybe it's telling that there's only one Plain Ol' iPod model left - the 20GB model.

(I'm not counting the U2 iPod as a separate species.)

USB 2.0 is definitely where they're going.

Well, the Dock is where they're going - but I suspect they will make USB 2.0 the standard for the Dock so that PC users feel more accessible.

We'll see. I noticed the other flavor iPods (40 and 60GB standards) are still offered through HP...
