Happy birthday, Becca!

Re: the world events -

Benedict XVI will probably be a transition pope, and one who, I suspect, will not be able to rock the boat all that much in either direction. We'll see, I could be surprised, but I'm doubting he'll last more than 5 years. He's conservative enough to make the hardline happy, but I suspect he's mostly going to finish out JPII's policy book, probably write a few more pages, and then die or abdicate.

Or, maybe he'll play a giant game of pope-a-dope with us all, and we'll be surprised and enlightened, one way or the other.

But how am I supposed to take him totally seriously when he looks like Ian McDiarmid?

We must all learn how to say "Bring in young Skywalker" in Latin.

My understanding is he is the one who wrote JPII's policy book. And he's even more conservative...the Yalies on the Hill are pretty depressed about it. They guy is about the worst option possible for female friends of mine who desperately want to be ordained. :/

We'll see - I'm really expecting he'll be moderated by his position, and that major changes will wait for his successor.

Hopefully everything will work out, in time.

*shrug* I don't think a Pope ever gets "moderated" so to speak. That's the job that allows you to do whatever you believe to be "God's Work".... :/ I find it very worrying. Not to mention that this is the man who encouraged JPII to make all kinds of absolute statements that have created a place where the Church can't change in the way that so many liberal Christians hope for...

I think that (hopefully!) the fact that he has to work with not only the entire Church, but also be a peer to the heads of other religions and states will make him look at how he addresses the affairs of the church, because he will have to work with these people in many ways.

We'll see...all we can really do is hope. I'd guess we'll see some signs of how things are likely to go in the next couple of weeks.

Ian McDiarmid? Are you sure you don't mean H.R. Giger (http://www.livejournal.com/users/pfarley/69038.html)?

Pope-a-dope!! AHAHAHAHA. That's awesome. :)

I'll admit there's resemblances to both, but face it - if he'd called himself Pope Sidious I, do you really think people would have been surprised?
