Buccaneer = anglicisation of boucanier = noun form of boucane = old French and current Creole word for smoke = thing to put on meat.

This is intense confirmation that the barbeque chef is the modern form of pirate.
It also kinda explains why a lot of the guys who do professional BBQ cookoffs have ridiculous beards or moustaches, and wear lots of silly hats.

Actually, though, the gunpowder and all those annoying "wanted by order of the colonial governor" posters are the firestarters. The rum's in the marinade.
