Holiday weekend...

bzarcherThe more I think, "Hey, I should write something about how the weekend went", I find myself at a loss for what to say. Given that, I'm going to try leaving this window up for awhile, and writing in it as I go today.
The most obvious thing I should say is that it was a VERY good weekend. Best I've had since...god, I don't know when. Nobody felt any pressure to get things done or go places, things were generally lazy and enjoyable, and nobody was stressed out or worried about anything. I like weekends where I'm busy because we're going out and doing things with friends, but a weekend where everything was very lax and comfy, and we still got to see a ton of friends, well, that's heaven.
I did some chronicling of our trip to Dayton, and the long-due celebration of Steve which occured. Saturday began with only a mild hangover and a trip to the store to do a bit of grocery shopping. Burgers and corn were purchased, buns surveyed, charcoal taken stock of, and we ended up buying a small $10 generic grill so we could do corn roasting/burger flipping without having to worry about managing the roast's grill time quite as tightly.
Alex and I both did a ton of painting on our 40k armies. My Dark Angels are basically done - I just need to finish the Techmarine and Librarian (and will buy the paint I need for that this Friday, I suspect), maybe get a Chaplain and a few more marines to fill out the HQ troops, and it's a pretty serviceable basic army. I'm currently hoping to snipe a few cheap Rhinos off eBay and a Whirlwind to give some transport for squads and a bit of fire support, and a Razorback to give my Devastators a nice and deadly ride.
Alex's Sisters of Battle are nearly done, and looking quite good, and his Inquisitor Lord is fantastic. He based the paintjob off of Alucard, and it shows. He did a beautiful job there. Next step, his Seraphim and the Inquisitor's retinue. He's getting better and better as he goes - it's fun to watch. Once he gets his HQ stuff finished, I think we're going to start running some small battles just to get comfy with the rules, and then we'll be able to start hitting Guardtower or some of the other stores to play others, and probably hit a few of the tournaments coming soon.
We also had a pretty good weekend in Paragon City. Still haven't gotten to team up with![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
indigoskynet yet, but Alex and I had a really fun run into the Volcano with a bunch of PvPers, and much teamspeak revelry was had. Then, the next day, we took Doyle and Burn out and ripped through some Praetorians and Malta, and I finally shazamed 43, then took Glacial out for awhile and I've nearly gotten him to 32. :> I'm looking forward to the couple million influence I'm about to lose in exchange for a full slate of 35s...
Lisa and I spent a lot of the weekend flirting, teasing, playing, and enjoying. She also spent a good bit sleeping, but that's a pretty good way to pass time on a holiday, too. :D She's been wonderful about letting me seep into my geek lately, and either dipping in herself or reaching in to bring me a bit closer to the surface if I'm in too deep.
The 500 actually held my interest for the first time since I was twelve. Pretty much the entire BBQ crowd spent the day watching it, and we all got caught up in Danica Patrick. I firmly believe that if she hadn't gotten caught by a few small mistakes and the minor accident that damaged her nose, she'd have won. As it is, she did damn well, and the fact that she pushed herself back up from being down at 16th to lead the race for a huge amount of laps, and then only fell back to 4th because her fuel had simply gotten too low to hold on (she only had a teaspoon left at the end!) We made fun of NASCAR and discussed how Danica had made the sport a lot more interesting to the average fan.
And then there was food.
Good god, but there was food.
Saturday we mostly had some snacks, made pasta for an early dinner/late lunch, and did some marinading and prep for Sunday. Sunday we had the BBQ that many and sundry attended (HURRAH!) and served burgers, chips fromspiralpegasus, pickles, veggie-trays brought by las, cheeses from sillyfox and her husband, the always huge Jim, roast corn (mmmmm) and the pork roast of much goodness. Everyone came hungry and left pretty stuffed, and we had plenty of leftovers for yesterday and today.
However, we didn't eat quite as many leftovers as we expected, sincelas called and invited us to another BBQ, along with dklegman, and we trooped over, got to meet another batch of interesting people, traded trivial, ruminated on the Republic, and I found out that even if you're a geek among geeks, when you're the only person in a room full of SF/Fantasy fans, including 2 published Fantasy/Horror authors, who knows that the guy who Obi-Wan cut the arm off of in Episode 4 was an Aqualish, you've turned the geek up to a very scary level.
The evening from there was fairly sedate, but we did manage to catch The Legend of Michiba on Iron Chef, including a bunch of flashbacks to the first season, where Kaga managed to look like a very gay, Japanese, Col. Sanders.
We also watched a lot of NCAA men's lacrosse. Alex got all up into it, and dragged us in with a zany enthusiasm, and I have to admit I thrilled to watch Johns Hopkins come from behind in both the semi-finals and the finals to take the Championship.
I'm a lacrosse fan. Who knew?
