White House Press Briefing this morning.

The wolves have come out of the forest, and their teeth are sharp and hungry.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer Administration.

Yeah. Hell, I'd settle for Mike McCurry or Joe Lockheart.

Though really, I wish we had C.J. Craig.

It's almost laugh-out-loud funny ... except for the fact it's true rather than a skit for Saturday Night Live.

Oh, I laughed. It wasn't always the 'hey, that's funny' laugh, though.

Did you happen to watch yesterday's The Daily Show? :D

Stewart: The question is whether or not the White House is accountable for the delayed response for aid in the wake of Katrina. The short answer is... yes. *audience laughs* The long answer is...

*shouts* YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!

I thought the journalists had a couple good Jerusalem moments:

"MR. McCLELLAN: You don't want to take away from the efforts that are going on right now. And if you start getting into that now, you're pulling people out that are helping with the ongoing response, Terry. Not at all. The President made it very clear, I'm going to lead this effort and we're going to make sure we find out what the facts were and what went wrong and what went right. But you don't want to divert resources away from an ongoing response to a major catastrophe. And this is a major catastrophe that we -- and we must remain focused on saving lives and sustaining lives and planning for the long-term. And that's what we're doing.

Q And there are people in Louisiana and Mississippi who are doing that job very well. Your job is to answer the questions."

Mister Sweeney! Show us your penis! Show it to us now! We need to see it for special journalistic purposes! Ignore my filthy assistants, Mister Sweeney! They won't do a thing! Whip it out!

I just like how this little minegarden was laid:

Q And how about my first question?

MR. McCLELLAN: Your first question?

Q Biggest tax cut, permanent tax cut for the richest people in the country -- in view of the national crisis, in view of the deficit --

MR. McCLELLAN: The highest priority for this administration right now is the ongoing response and recovery efforts --

Q No, no, I'm asking you a question.

MR. McCLELLAN: And I'm responding to your question. The highest priority right now for this government is the ongoing Katrina response and recovery efforts and helping the people who need the help. There are other priorities, too, and we'll be working to address those, as well.

Q I just want to follow up on David's questions on accountability. First, just to get you on the record, where does the buck stop in this administration?

MR. McCLELLAN: The President.

Q All right. So he will be held accountable as the head of the government for the federal response that he's already acknowledged was inadequate and unacceptable?

There are many days where I hate the pess for their biased, bullheaded refusal to look at more than one side of an issue. Today I'm rather glad for it. Still, I wish someone had asked the question, "What can we do to help the 1,000,000 people displaced by Katrina?" Blame is important, but moreso are food, clothing, and shelter for these people.

A lot of that's coming from outside sources - some of them a bit unexpected. (Who would expect NBA and NFL stars to start throwing millions of dollars at the problem? But that's exactly what they're doing.)

But in the media's case, they're supposed to be our voice to the government, and I think the nation as a whole wants answers just as much as it wants aid - especially since this IS the government that encroached on a lot of freedoms and privileges people considered important in the name of 'Keeping America Safe', and now show they are totally unprepared to do so.

Seems like he expected to go out and do a little bit of public penis stroking, and instead of a happy little wanker, he found a pissed off, angry, raging erection.

I find it funny, but my prediction is one of two things:
1. If the Republicans next runner for President is in any way, shape or form related to the current group, they will be crushed.

2. The Republicans are looking very, very hard for a candidate that it not related to the current group.

From: [identity profile] bzarcher.livejournal.com
1: Entirely possible, especially if the Democrats do half as good a job on this as I'm betting they will. This is a HUGE blemish on the Republican party as a whole (especially since they've been touting control of congress and the executive, and how it lets them 'get things done', right?) I expect a repudiation in both the federal and state levels.

2: Also true, but I suspect it's going to be hard to find one that's not related to the current power structure AND viable for the presidency.

After all, the 'big names' of Republican Politics don't look good at all right now, and who's left with name recognition? McCain? Possible, but unlikely - and his age is becoming an issue. Also his flipflops on abortion and gay rights ticked off a lot of moderate Republicans. Keyes? Don't make me laugh.

Bauer or Hatch might figure out something, but I don't see much. Too obscure or too likely to be taken as a crackpot, especially for Bauer. There's only one conservative politician of repute out there I can think of who they might get into the White House, but given he's sworn it off, I really don't see them getting him out there.

Powell.

Not connected to the 2nd term, VERY distanced from the 1st term screwups, and generally came out of the G.W. Bush Presidency as a good man who got screwed by the administration until he finally quit.

That said, I do not expect him to run for office ever - his family seems quite serious about wanting him to stay out of politics, and he's the sort of man who would listen to that, I think.

I object strongly to the wolf imagery in that statement =P

But yeah. I think there are some real problems in the way those questions are answered.

Thanks for the post
