bzarcher: A Sylveon from Pokemon floating in the air, wearing a pair of wingtip glasses (Fexicon)

Finally, a boring 40k update.

I've been working my way through the battleforce box from the top down:

Carnfiex is done. So are the Warriors. I've put together a Ripper base out of the rippers from those sprues and now have enough Ripper bases to field them as a troops choice if needed (and should get one more from the Gaunt sprues easily. Don't think I'll use the spinefist ones from the genestealers, tho.)

Gaunts are primed and I'll probably do Hormagaunts first, Termagaunts second, Rippers, and then prime and hopefully bang out the last genestealers.

At that point, getting to full tournament weight gets interesting.

I have a line on a possible cheap and unbuilt winged Hive Tyrant. If I get him, build him up, and buff another unit or two, that makes a good possibility.

If I can't, I think I go with a 4th ed Tyrant + 3 Tyrant guard and take my chances.

The Tyrant with the gaurd will last longer, but the winged one causes damage sooner.

I run a winged tyrant only because I don't need him. I have two other synapse units that are pretty low priority for opponents. I wouldn't suggest going with a winged tyrant unless you can play with out one. Cause your opponent will take his lunch money. He'll use powerfists, beefed up powerweapons (furious charge is a bitch), and plasma weaponry. And because your tyrant is ahead of a lot of the other big nasty stuff, he eats it first. Now, mine usually gets his points back, and then some. Another trick is this.

Take a winged tyrant and some tyrant guards. Once the gaurds are dead, your tyrant has covered a good amount of ground without a scratch. Problem is, until the gaurd are dead, he's moving on foot. Then, he unfurls his wings, and plows from combat to combat, kicking ass and taking names.

I've already got...9 other models on the board providing Synapse, so I'm not too worried about that (and it may increase to 10 if I get a third 'Thrope)

My plan on the Tyrant was to gie him Warp Field and Scything talons with the Init. and WS. tweaking glands and let him slip in and out of terrain until he can buzz into units and slice them up at speed, and if he's lost, he's lost, but hopefully he'll give a good accounting.

Can the Winged one be run w/ Guards? I wasn't sure that was legal, even if he did stay on the ground until they died.

There's nothing that says he can't. It's no different than a jump pack equipped chaplain joining a foot slogging unit. Difference is, the Tyrant can't leave the guards.

Also, give him the Strength bonus. You'll want that S6. Wounding damn near everything on a 2+, with no armor saves? It's nice.

OK, I thought the codex rules stated a tyrant with wings could not have Guard. I'll re-read that, but...ooo.

Yeah, Strength does make sense put that way.

It's been a while, so you may be right. I didn't think he couldn't have them, just that he can't leave them.

OK, that was me, also.

Either way, this demands...RESEARCH!

Yeah, according to the 'dex, Tyrant Guard can only be chosen if the Tyrant does NOT have the wings biomorph.

Ah well. Still, the rest of what I said stands.

Just don't do the "I'm gonna be a CC Tyrant with no wings."

I can't remember, can you still give him leaping these days? If not, you essentially get the same charge range, however, unless you bounce into combat every turn, you're going slower.

Oh, I'm not dumb enough to do a CC tyrant with no wings.

You can't give Tyrants leaping, but that's ok - the more I think about it, an unwinged tyrant has the Guards to take hits and CC for him. :D

If I do a non-CC one, probably go with Venom Cannon, twinlinked Devourers, and toys.

You can't? That sucks, you used to be able to.
