You have been warned!

After getting my potential GT army reamed over at Dakka, I've been reworking it over and over, and I just hit an idea that I think might work, so I want to get feed back from friends before I throw it at others.

I could trim back the Genestealers to all be even sets of 8 and add another 'thrope, maybe...

Where are your gaunts? Honestly, I'd drop the elite and one heavy fex, and dump all those points into gaunts. And probably one of the Genestealer units. Hormagaunts work great, cause they'll eat up a lot of firepower. No one wants to face a charge of 60-90 dice at initiative 4.

Monsterous creatures are great, but they're easily outmatched by many other heavy supports.

That really is a small sized army for 'nids.

I've been getting mixed reactions about gaunts - it seems like people on the forums I've been hitting put much more faith in 'stealers for getting across the board.

Now, I can take out a 'fex or two and dump in, but will they be survivable?

Hormagaunts are more survivable because they will get in combat quicker. Genestealers are nice against heavy infantry, but against regular foot soldiers, meh.

And also, a 12" charge means the difference of a whole turn before hitting combat.

Here's the other big thing. Mathmatically, Gaunts will lose more crossing the board. HOWEVER. Place something next to them, and they'll take far less firepower. Genestealers don't get that luxury. There aren't a lot of things in the 'nid army that people fear more than genestealers. Warriors, Zoathropes, Raveners. All the mid weight stuff will live. Genestealers will die. And rightly so. I'd rather face 3 warriors then 12 genestealers.

But here's another trick that's a lot easier with a large unit of gaunts. Split assault. I'm assuming it's still a viable rule. I'd have to check. But it's a lot easier trying to tie up two units with a big mess o' gaunts than the scraggly remains of a genestealer brood.

As you can tell, I'm a gaunt advocate. :P

Hmm. I'll try a bit of mix and match.

Maybe drop 1 unit of stealers for at least 16 gaunts, maybe drop a fex for gaunts and more stealers in the other two units?

Yea. But if you run the gaunts seperate, treat them as a single unit. It'll really screw up your opponent. "I'm shooting the gaunts." "which ones?" Obviously, you have to seperate them..but not by much. :)

That much I think I can figure out. :D

What happens if the 2 "squads" of gaunts assault 2 seperate units, tho?

From: [identity profile] flying-landon.livejournal.com
Well, since they are two seperate squads, that's all there is to it. But the thing is, legally, you have two troop choices used, but as far you're playing, you're treating them like one. Just forcing your oppenent to choose between two. Doesn't mean much until one unit is near dead, and they can only kill like...3 gaunts. :P

OK, here's a rework - tell me what you think?

HQ is unchanged.

Dropped the dakkafex from Elites.

Troops:

2 slots of Genestealers as above
2 slots of Hormagaunts, no biomorphs.

Heavy:

3 'Thropes with Psychic Scream and Warp Blast
Gunfex.

Oh - 12 'stealers per slot, 16 Gaunts per slot.

How many Gaunts per brood?

I think you'll find your survivability has increased a bit.
