Translation: I bent over and recieved steaming lungfuls of "Moral Majority" lobbyist semen.

I had this brilliant idea that the Democrats could, y'know, maybe run by presenting alternatives and counters to all those programs from the Party in Power that have been such divisive and outraging. But I guess copying them down to the dots and crosses is a supposedly viable strategy, too.

Oh, Howard. You actually had some potential.

Barack Obama.

I seriously hope he can become what a lot of people believe he will be, but right now I think he needs to walk before he runs.

Another thing they've learned, and succeeded in doing, is how to find a way to marginalize a threat to the establishment (Dean) by putting him in a prominent but ultimately politically weak position. They learned from Theodore Roosevelt that the VP spot is too close for comfort, but the head of the DNC is much more insulated from accidents of history.

Sure, Dean's crazy. He DID make people care, and he might have gotten some things done. That's anathema to these people.

It's sad, because I think Dean could have actually been a viable candidate, and right now we need a threat from your side to get some of our stupider members to wake up and smell the constituency.

Hell, I'm not sure whose side I'm on, but I'd be happy to see SOMETHING that shook things up from the pattern of the last 12 years.

(Honestly, my heart lies in fiscal conservatism. A national debt is only a good thing when it is being monitored, not when it runs rampant, and the government's programs and policies should reflect that. No more tax and spend or voodoo forecasting.)

We need to get the money in this country under control. Massive social safety nets are not the way to go, considering we're going to have more people taking out of the system than putting in REALLY SOON NOW. If we have to push the entire system to collapse before it gets fixed, it'll hurt way more, but that's the way it looks right now.

How many OTHER First World nations do we have to watch suffer through this before we learn?

Oh, probably all of them.

At the very least, we need to take a strong look at some of the changes made to how social services work in some of our peers - for example, Welfare equivalents that will cut your ass off if you fail to work on getting education and/or aren't actually seeking work.

It would be great if we could set up some sane, humane boundaries on our welfare system. However, certain political interests enjoy having a permanent underclass (these interests exist on both sides of the aisle).

This is the same reason we're never going to fix the border situation, either.

I know you're probably right. But I won't stop thinking of ways it should be made right.
