Jul. 13th, 2006 02:00 pmResearchers at Warwick Medical School link sleep deprivation with obesity.
Now, that's interesting, because I know for a fact I had a great deal of problems sleeping as a kid (OK, OK, I still have a great deal of problems sleeping as an adult, too, but that's not my point). I went through pretty much every day with only four or five hours, and then caught sleep on the weekends.
I know that sleep apnea can be caused by obesity, but has anyone studied if it occurs more frequently in children who become obese?
Either way, neat development, and unfortuantely, proof that you can't cut corners on sleep without it coming back to hurt you in more ways than one.

Date: 2006-07-13 06:42 pm (UTC)depression is linked to serotonin, which is linked to sleep. the better you sleep, the more likely you are to be happy. and, vice versa, depression caused by chemical imbalance can lead to less sleep.
depression is linked to changes in diet. you are more likely to eat high-carb, bad for you foods when depressed, than when not depressed. (also, like the article said, sleep is connected with what you have a craving for.)
Also, when well rested, exercise is more effective.
So many things are linked to sleep, and obesity, that the web of cause and effect is more complicated than how they made it sound. From what I understand of your childhood, it is possible that you weren't sleeping because of depression.
