Finally watched Decoding Ferrain Adria.

Somewhere between amazement and awe at a lot of what I saw there. I understood a lot of the materials he was using, if not what he was doing with them (Woo AP Chem), but seeing his creations, and reactions of Tony and others eating them, just blew me completely away. It was like watching a guy walk up to a desk full of tinkertoys, and making a Lotus Super 7 out of them. Sure, it's possible, kinda, but how?!

What is this?

It was an episode of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, from the Travel Channel, about a Spanish chef named Ferrain Adria.

Adria basically uses SCIENCE + genius + love to get into what makes us react to food, and tries to create dishes that are kinda strange, and kinda beautiful, but also get very powerful reactions at the experience of eating.

...I'm really not doing it justice at all.

I would see if you can catch a rerun (or, well, let's be honest - BT it), and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Or locate and buy the DVD, since it's not an ep of No Reservations, it's a separate special Tony did out of his own pocket when Food TV told him they didn't want to fund a trip to El Bulli.

Oo. That's going on the wishlist, then. I didn't realize it was available otherwise.

Note to anyone looking for the DVD: If you search "Anthony Bourdain" on Amazon.com or Best Buy, for some wierd reason you get redirected to Dave Attel's Insomina Tour DVD. Funny, but not so much what you're looking for. You have to search for Adria.

(And then it brings it up as Anthony Bourdain's Decoding Ferrain Adria. [livejournal.com profile] bredmold, I suspect your hand in this madness.)
