Y'know, I think he's got a point there...

We were talking about this at work because two of our team members just flew back from Denver last night. The general consensus was that people are going to get sick of this real quick. I wonder if there's going to be some kind of backlash for this in the polls, or if it'll fade off before any other primaries or elections.

Schneier thinks that if they're going to have short-term measures, these aren't too ridiculous to have. He also links another good analysis.

For a short term, yes, but if it lasts more than a week or two, I think it's going to be more and more annoying, especially for buisness travelers.

I do think that the decision to prohibt reading material is just stupid, however. The justification for liquids and electronics, while annoying, I can understand, but if someone's a threat because they think they're going to take over the plane with the latest Laurel K. Hamilton novel, I think we've already lost.

(Well, OK, the big loser there is a tossup between the system, and someone actually buying said novel, but...)

While I wouldn't be against banning, say, The Complete Works of Shakespeare or an Unabridged Dictionary from carry-on, I'm willing to risk death by papercuts in exchange for being allowed to bring a book into the cabin.
