It smells like vapor and looks five years old, but here's the thing:
You can poo-poo Derek Smart and his games all day, but he's really the only recognizable guy championing that genre of game. And he's been very consistent in that regard for what, a decade?
Where's Volition? Oh yeah, they remade Grand Theft Auto.
Where's the guys who did Tie Fighter?
What happened to Origin?
And after them, Digital Anvil?
Smart says some remarkably sane things in this interview, too. He wants to make a more focused game this time around. He's not trying to tell some great big epic, like you see when literary Science Fiction and video games (typically) collide in a train wreck.
I also think this might help convince other developers and publishers to work in this dead genre again. He certainly isn't hurting anybody.
You may be right - I'm just very bitter and leery after Battlecruiser 2000/3000/It'll be awesome.
He's a great booster of the genre, but what he brings to the table is often a very nasty product, once you get the box open. It's like having Uwe Boll making your favorite type of movie - it's good that it's around, I suppose, but did it really have to be him?
I no longer see the point to hating on this guy; he's enthusiastic, he's about something, and it's not like he's being controversial about (I dunno) brain surgery. Why people act like he is boggles my mind.
Yeah, but who else is doing what he does?

Dickie V ain't known for his coaching, either.
