So, we did go out to the movies, Lisa, Gary, Lucy, and I. I'd suggested the three movies I'm actually pretty interested in (Pan's Labyrinth, Last King of Scotland, and Smokin' Aces), and we settled on Pan's Labyrinth. (I suppose the other two will happen later. :D)

My god, it's beautiful, brilliantly directed, and pulls no punches whatsoever. By the end of it, I was totally drawn in, and was torn between "Wow, what a good movie" and "I need to hide somewhere and cry, please."

If you haven't seen it, I strongly reccomend that you do.

I totally loved Pan's Labyrinth. I saw it in NY over new year's and I feel the same way. Definitely something that everyone should see.

I now really want to see The Devil's Backbone, too. And fortunately, it looks like Gary and Lucy should have it on DVD soon...

Oh - right. It's Kronos that's coming with the set. Dur.

Sorry. :D

I hadn't actually hear of The Devil's Backbone until you mentioned it. Of course with my insatiable curiousity I had to look it up and now I want to see it. Thanks, Matt - like I'm not already behind enough on seeing good movies =P

So they went to see it twice. Can't blame them though, it's a marvelous film, well worth a second perusal so the details are more fully absorbed.

You're choices were good ones, Last King of Scotland is definitely on my list (along with Venus, want to see Best Actor settled.)

Aren't movies wonderful?

Yeah, Lisa really wanted to see it, and Lucy and Gary got into the idea pretty easily as well. :D

Which, really, is fine - I have two more passes from work, still, and I might just go catch Last King of Scotland on my own later. :D

It's been awhile since I saw something in the theatre - the last two I can remember working myself up to go to were Casino Royale and A Scanner Darkly. The high cost of movie tickets and a lack of much really compelling stuff out of Hollywood, of late, have kept me away. But it was really nice to get a satisfying experience out of it when I have gone.

really compelling stuff

I'm lucky enough that a new art theatre opened semi-recently in Indy, so now I have more of an opportunity to see off-the-wall not-Hollywood-norm stuff again.

If they actually go by who performed better, Whittaker will win. There's a tiny chance they'll give O'Toole the Oscar for sentimental reasons.

That said, as a whole, I think Venus was better than Last King.

And all other things aside, it's criminal that Children of Men is not up for best picture.

Wasn't it AWESOME? We saw it after good dinner and great beer at Gordon Biersch. which, by the by, you should go to and try their Heffeweiszen. It is GOOD beer. I could drink a whole growler of it myself, if I didn't have to share with the man.

Oh, Yes.

I've been to Gordon Biersch, over by the arena, for a lunch thing a couple years ago. Sadly, I had to drive, so I didn't get to try anything. (And there was the small matter of also having to work after lunch!)

Wouldn't mind going down there again and having fud.

Oh yeah

So were you in Columbus again, or do they just have a Gordon Biersch out near VA, too?

They have one, one, and only one out here, in the biggest mall/complex/small town I've seen.

Does the parking lot have a mayor?

Uhhh...no? It's in a mall. Across from Barnes and Noble.

Oops - sorry. I was thinking of the joke about how some places are "parking lots with mayors" - for some reason that remark about the size of the mall reminded me of that.

I think that is an excellent description of my reaction to such a great, engrossing movie.
