So, CNN has a neat tool to let you see fundraising in your state for the Election.

"OK", says I, "Let's see what's up."

Dems is about what you'd expect: Obama at about $800k (pretty evenly distributed with spikes in Cuyahoga, Franklin, and Hamilton counties), Clinton around $750k (ditto) , Edwards with about $450k (mostly from down near the WV border), and then a sharp drop leading to Mike Gravel at $1,500. March on, you old soldier.

Republicans is...um...

1. Mitt Romney - $1.5 million dollars (WTF? Somewhat more interesting - over $750k of that came from Hamilton County / Cincinnati. Wow.)

2. Rudy Gulliani - $750k (hey, I guess he did actually campaign somewhere outside of NYC)

3. McCain - $325k

4. Ron Paul - $309,191? WHAT THE FUCK.

Pretty much every county in Ohio without a major city (ie: farmland) gave him at least $2,000 in donations.

That's...

Um.

God, What the fuck? I think we manage to be Ron Paul's "Biggest fundraisers" by that standard, and I want to throw up a little in my mouth just for typing that.

Hamilton County is sort of the head of GOPdom in Ohio, with a whole lot of Tafts (including William Howard) coming from there. It's a very conservative town, so much so that I'm not sure you can buy a Playboy over the counter there. You certainly don't have the sort of stores found in Columbus. So a big fundraising spike from Hamilton county is to be expected.

Paul has done very well on the internet, probably as the standard bearer for libertarians in the Republican party, some of who may be learning that they can't get elected as libertarians. I'm not sure if we're his peak, but he's done very well in fund raising and has a hard core of supporters who are true believers. So yes, he's still there though I doubt if he'll even be allowed to speak at the Republican National Infomercial.

I didn't realize that's where the power base was - I suppose I expected it to either be closer to Chillicothe or Dayton.

I actually hope we are at, or past, Ron Paul's peak. The idea of him accumulating more political capital is pretty scary.

He's been successful at raising money, but you're as likely to get the nomination, much less win the election. I figure he's a like a steam vent for a certain type of crank.

True, but the more money he collects, the more likely he is to try again, and again, and again...

The Ron Paul 'money bombs' grassroots movement was extraordinarily successful (considering that before this year, I don't think anyone outside of Texas, nay, outside of Galveston County, knew who Ron Paul was) all over the place.

I think I mostly knew of him in the "butt of jokes" sense...

I usually feel at my ickiest when I pass a shop that offers payday loans with a Ron Paul sign out front.

Ew. That really is just disturbing.

Yes you can buy Playboy over the counter here. :P Yes, the Taft museum is here...and no, it's not dedicated to the president. It's actually the home of his half-brother and sister-in-law and it's full of art.

Hamilton County is also one of the very few place in the United States with a comprehensive "healthcare for all" plan. Feds take notice! Leave it to the counties! Cincinnati is oddly enough organized along the lines of "what side of town" and "what parish in the aforementioned side."

Dayton is -far- more liberal. Cincinnati is the place where -while Jerry Springer was for a time the mayor- Larry Flynt was repeatedly taken to count on obscenity charges.

Huh. I guess I just wouldn't have expected that with Dayton being in a more rural area compared to Cincinnati being in a more cosmopolitan setting. Oh, well. Shows what I know. :D
