One thing I re-learned today is that part of the reason we don't buy new game consoles or home theatre gear more than once every year or two is how much of a pain it is to rearrange all those wires!

As it is, for some reason the Wii's regular AV cable doesn't seem to like me, so I had to use the component I got on instinct, but the problem is to use the Wii Component cable I had to unplug the 360's cable.

Don't be shocked if I mention getting a component splitter box to augment the receiver...but that's another show.

Dave, Alex, and I got everything working and messed around pretty dedicatedly from about 7:30 until um...jesus, 12:45am. Alex made an amazingly tasty bacon mac an' cheese in there, too.

Short impressions:

Megaman 9: MMMMMMMMM. That rich, earthy, old school flava.

Wii Sports:
-Bowling: Really fun! Alex has a wicked strike when he warms up
-Golf: I had a lot of fun. Dave found it a little too subtle for his normal playing style.
-Tennis: Even with an odd number (3) we all really enjoyed this. Worked up a nice sweat. My power serve has improved. Worked up a nice sweat.
-Baseball: Dave hits the long ball. Beisbol has been very, very good.
-Boxing: I SHOOK UP THE WORLD

WiiPlay: Um.....kinda ugh, actually. Felt less like a set of games and more like a demo disc that should have
been in the original Wii box. Laser hockey had a pleasant Tron feel, and the shooting gallery wasn't bad, but all things considered I wonder if I should have just bought a regular controller and saved $10.

Smash Bros Brawl: Tons of fun, but Dave must be kept away from Samus at all costs. Until I re-learn my Kirby skills. At which point, it is -on-, motherfucker.

No More Heroes: Dude. This.....doesn't take itself seriously at all, nor should it. I played this while Alex and Dave watched for the tutorial and first mission, and it was seriously entertaining for all of us. Might be one of the more fun games I've played this year. Certainly has the hilarious but obscene dialog down.

Good lord, it's 1:30. I should go to bed...

The general consensus on Wii Play is that the minigames are perfectly reasonable at $10. I tend to agree with this consensus.

Yeah, but I don't see that much replay value, do you?

It's a fun one to bring out when you have non-gamer friends/relatives who want to play with the Wii, and have gotten bored of Wii Sports.

OK, that I can see.

Two words: Excite Truck. Imagine taking all the fun of the 8bit racer Excite Bike, including dynamics of engine temperature and tapping the button to recover from a crash, making it 4wd trucks, and rewarding on not just finishing, but finishing in style. Seriously. A good example of letting realism take a back seat to fun.

Also: Raving Rabbids. D'auuuuuuuuuuuugh!

Hm! We shall see here.

My current plan for next purchase is probably mario kart.

no no. not mario kart. it's a bitch and a half to play on the wii; too sensitive on the controls. stick with an older version, instead.

and then, go buy Rayman Raving Rabbids. You have to beat story mode to get multiplayer, but you can trade the controller for that. worth WEEKS of fun and entertainment. we're about to buy the 2nd one, and we don't even own our wii

Well, we'll see. :) I will try MK and if we don't like it, it can go back and we'll look for RRR.

Anyone have Mario Party 8? That was pretty fun last night.

You can always use a Gamecube or a classic controller to play Mario Kart in the more traditional way.

I have, and even then it's touchy. same goes for trying to play classic mario bros with the wii controller. very responsive, almost too much so

I haven't actually played Mario Kart on the Wii, so you could well be right, there. But I love the Wiimote for NES games. I find the classic controller's pad to be just a little too big and the buttons to have just a little too much travel in them.

Tradition

You get Kirby figured out? It's on.

Get Captain Falcon unlocked? It's over.

Oh no you didn't.

Have fun with Mega Man 9. I managed to finish it the day it came out, but it pretty much occupied my afternoon and evening and boy was I ever frustrated at times.

(Also, Mega Man can't slide, to answer a comment in your last post. Proto Man, though, will be able to. He can be bought for 200 points in a few weeks. He can also charge shot)

As much as I'd love to brawl you, all I got for Wii-nternet access right now is the WiFi dongle, which has a terrible speed and would essentially make SSBB unplayable.

No slide? Damn them. Oh, well. Protoman shall be my salvation.

No worries about the speed - I totally understand.

Protoman can slide and charge and has a shield. But he takes double damage, and cannot buy things in the shop. So, uh, he's probably harder.

Hm. Well, we'll see. :)

There'll also be a special stage downloadable which will have a new boss at the end, and an 'endless' stage which you run to see how far/how many points you get. And two new difficulty settings will also be downloadable: Hard, and Very Hard (!!!)

Kinda makes me wonder what they have planned for them...

Regarding other Wii games, Mario Galaxy is an excellent 3D platformer. Metroid Prime 3 is pretty fun too, but I recommend the other Prime games over it (yes, even 2). The control scheme in Prime 3 is really really great on the Wii, but otherwise the so-so level design and how much the game railroads you adds some 'meh' to it.

You already have No More Heroes. I've heard good things about Zack and Wiki, a little cutesey but it's essentially Tron Bonne without Tron Bonne.

I've been wanting to pick up WarioWare, but it still goes for more than I'm willing to spend, the price refuses to drop. From what I've read, I'd avoid Wario Land: Shake It. It seemed promising at first, and has gorgeous 2D animation but the level design is utterly uninspired. In other words, it's the polar opposite of Mega Man 9.

That's really all I can think of for now. If you see it for cheap, maybe pick up Super Paper Mario. It's short, and it has its dull parts, but there's enough humor in the title to make it worth playing once if you're a Mario fan.

It sounds like you got the same stuff that we did more or less! I really enjoy No More Heroes as well. Later on some of the minigames get tedious but they're just warmups for the levels.

Cool!

Alex picked up Mario Party, too. Do you guys have that?

We do not have Mario Party, but we do have several other games aside from those named:

* Sonic and the Secret Rings: Avoid.
* Okami: Avoid, get for PS2 instead.
* Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People 1 & 2 (WiiWare): Old-school adventure game action. Get.

I actually don't mind Sonic. :(

But yeah seriously fuck Okami

I guess so.

Oh, and if you're into voiding warranties, there's a very easy softmod that opens up piles of homebrew.

I've been playing Sam & Max Hit the Road via ScummVM in preparation for Season 1 coming out next week.
