bzarcher: A Sylveon from Pokemon floating in the air, wearing a pair of wingtip glasses (hk40k)

So, after very positive reviews from PVPforums + Penny Arcade's rather stirring reccomendation, one of the first things I did when I got home today was download and install the new Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War demo.

After some CoH and before dedicated snuggles with Lisa, I actually played some of it.

Kids? If you like big guns, RTS, Warhammer, spectacular violence, or any of the above in combinations or by themselves? You should seriously think about buying it when it comes out next week. I've never been a huge 40k player (Thanks, GW, it seems nifty, but $500 for a starting army so I can actually play the game and all is a bit steep), but I was sucked in completely by the Tutorial and I look forward to tackling some of the campaign this weekend.

Ever Vigilant!

$500 is a bit farfetched, but you're not to far off.

Thus the wonders of Ebay and net-stores. :D

Yea, Dawn of War is pretty damned cool. I wish it had more armies though.

And I have to break your heart. The demo Campaign is a level. Mind you, it's an hour to beat, if you haul ass through it.

Well, for a good starter Ultramarine chapter, you are probably talking $200-$250, and probably another $50-75 on paints and brushes.

The extra $200? If you need to set up another army so you have something to play against.

eBay helps a lot, but I still prefer Battletech, where a nicely done lump of gum on a hexbase can be a mech if I have a good sheet. :D Though I'm getting ready to buy a bunch of figs for /that/ with some of the guys, so colour me a loon. :D

Only one level? DAMNIT. At least it'll take awhile. And I did find out how to unlock the Orcs, so maybe Alex and I can play some net games.

Wait...You can unlock the orks?

Unless there's something else, it's only Single. When we tried to see what happened it was all "Blah blah blah Multi in full retail"

The campaign has Guard trooper models and they already made the Leman Russ, so Imperial Guard strikes me as being the easiest one for them to make for a hypothetical expansion pack...

I'd not be surprised if Guard show up in the full game, and if not, in an expansion or a content patch ala UT2k4's bonus packs.

The shocking thing is how the game is getting one of my friends to consider starting 40K. With a Guard army, no less. Of course Guard is my personal fave too...but that's a lot of cash outlay in Malaysia.

Dawn of War is really big damn In The Grim Darkness Of The Far Future There Is Only War fun. Love it when infantry gets knocked back by explosions and big whacking Thunder Hammers. Yet you need infantry to capture strategic points and win. A good balance.

This reminds me of a joke.

A Guardsman walks into a bar, and boy runs up to him.

"WOW! A real Imperial Guardsman! I want to grow up to be just like you!"

The Guardsman laughs and just gives the kid his Helmet before walking off to the bathroom.

A few minutes later, an Ultramarine comes in. The boy walks up to him and basically does the same "WOW!" routine.

The Marine looks over. "Eh, Blow me, kid."

The kid shakes his head. "Oh, no, Sir. I'm not a Guardsman! I'm just wearing his helmet."
