May. 27th, 2006 11:16 amX3 in a nutshell:
It's a popcorn movie after 2 somewhat more intellectual ones. It has a lot of moments, and it has some horrible "catchphrase" lines.
If you like the franchise (comic or movie), you'll get your $7 out of it, but probably have questions/concerns/scorn.
For my $.02...
Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut = HELL YEAH.
Magneto re: Mystique's fate - yes, he was pretty cold there. But remember he was also surrounded by Brotherhood, and new recruits at that, and he has to project a certain attitude around them if he wants to keep control over many of them. That's one of the problems with leading by demagougery.
Arclight - pretty convinced this was Chris Tucker in bad drag.
Plot hole I just realized: Plastic guns, plastic "cure cartridge"....very obviously metal needles on the tip of each "magneto proof" bullet.
Oops.
Oh, well. Still a good night out, and the evening's reflection/storytelling/alcoholism at Barleys before and the Char Bar after were well worth it.
Wandered through MarCon to see if we could spot people and take them out for a bit - from what I saw, it's increasingly BarCon, with many people going to the "party floors" more than the convention. Most of what we saw in the public areas around 10 seemed to be LARPers and people who hadn't gone to the party floor yet. Sad face.
I remember when the Big Bar on 2 used to be the "hang out" location for everyone, and a great place to reconnect with people. Ah, nostalgia...

Date: 2006-05-27 07:13 pm (UTC)There was. A very, very little bit.
The Cure was made because Worthington discovered his son Warren had grown wings. So he wanted to have his son take the cure first. Warren kept saying "dad, I can't do this," and Dad kept insisting it'd all be all right, and the usual line about "this is what we want". Warren said no, and did the mutant version of walking out in a huff.
And then That Woman in the Storm Costume got to tell Rogue off, because Rogue asked if the cure were real. She got the line [one of the few she delivered properly] "There's no such thing as a cure, because there's nothing wrong with you."
It wasn't a bad movie. It just wasn't a great movie.

Date: 2006-05-27 05:04 pm (UTC)Was considering going by Marcon, but I saw almost nobody I knew on the programming list and if it's even more a party con than before ... I'd rather hang out with you guys tomorrow, if you're up for it.

Date: 2006-05-28 03:42 pm (UTC)I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that was really a dude.
2nd plot hole: Magneto moves the bridge, broad daylight. Mutants step off the bridge, full of night.
what did you think of Pheonix as schizophrenia instead of fantastic pan-dimensional being? I personally thought it was weak, and didn't make much sense. Sure, schizo was all passion and impulse and pretty pissed at Charles. But wouldn't she go off and have sex and take over a theme park instetad of killing people? Killing people and attacking Alcatraz doesn't seem like a good time to me.

Date: 2006-05-29 01:35 am (UTC)Also: Phoenix is disintegrating everyone utterly. She can't even get past most of Wolverine's muscles.
Stupid? I think so.
And why they didn't "force the cure" on the known homicidal insane mutants(Juggernaut canonically wouldn't count due to actually gaining his powers from some gem thing mystical blah blah)...
Seriously, we kill people for killing others yet instead of simply removing most of their ability to kill as easily as they can, disrupt their chances of escape, etc, they leave them mutant'ish.
Stupid. Stupid stupid stupid. Stupid.

Date: 2006-05-30 09:07 pm (UTC)That said, I'm personally glad that said bar is smoke-free, because I used to hate having to toxify my lungs just to get to the elevators. Getting a drink there was absolutely out of the question.
