(In the paper the next day):

A motorcycle had crashed into a building because of brake failure. Two people were on it, but only one survived.

The truth was that halfway down the road, the guy had realized that his brakes broke, but he didn't want to let the girl know. Instead, he had her say she loved him & felt her hug one last time, then had her wear his helmet so that she would live, even though it meant that he would die.

Gives an interesting question, tho. Personally, I'd argue that even without brakes, there are ways to save both lives. And though no greater love has a man than to lay to his life for his comrades, I still say it's better for everyone to walk away...

It's a motorcycle, there's little excuse for not walking away. Even without brakes, it's possible to scrub significant amounts of speed and still maintain control--- or for pete's sake, lay the bike down. You'll have major lacerations as you slide, but little risk of a head injury. Aim it right (ie: lay it down as you approach a turn) and you can have the bike skid ahead of you into soft material, and you'll stop well before the bike does.
